The main source of concern as to whether carrageen might be harmful stems from the confusion of the noun usage. It was previously confused with poligeenan. Now, this is indeed a harmful substance. When treated correctly, it is utilized in medical imaging, a practice far removed from eating every day food.  The rule of thumb also is that poligeenan can never be mixed in with carrageenan. The process used to create poligeenan requires washing at high temperatures close to two hundred degrees Fahrenheit.
